1) In what ways might you translate the principles presented in the chapter into practical, everyday ideas you can use in your classes?
This chapter like the last encourages students in the decision making processes of the classroom. Working with the student council at our school I have seen that some students can really step forward in planning and coming up with ways of helping others. I have given students chances to make decisions in my classroom and usually they go beyond what I would have had them do in the first place. My challenge is to give them more responsibilty and plan something larger that could be shared. I also could try the gradient system although I think I would do it with small decisions and would use the 3 point system with third graders.
2) Armed with the brain research found in the chapter, what should educators be doing differently? In what ways might you suggest we start doing this?
We should be giving students a chance to make decisions in the classroom. It makes them feel like their voice is important and once again fosters belonging. I always like to give them options for assignments with the extra option of them coming up with a new way to show they know the material. At least one student will come up with something completely new for me which makes it more exciting for me as well.
3) How will you incorprate this research into your curriculum to make it more brain based?
I would like to use the 3 point gradient scale for some decisions in my class. I would also like to try having the students plan together a culminating event for one of my units. I have not had them do this and I think they would enjoy. I think I would also enjoy and be interested to see what they came up with.
